This article explores the critical issue of the role of enterprises in the context of sustainable development. The authors proceed from the premise that enterprises, as key elements of economic development, perform not only economic functions but also social, innovative, and environmental roles in society. The relevance of the study lies in the insufficient recognition of this multifaceted nature of enterprises, necessitating a comprehensive approach for their definition and analysis. The article aims to refine the economic significance of the enterprise, emphasizing its contribution to sustainable development. Utilizing historical methods and content analysis, the study examines existing scientific approaches and works that consider enterprises through the lens of their interaction with economic, social, and environmental systems, and with other related categories such as business, entrepreneurship, organization, startup, firm, and corporation. A retrospective analysis of the concept of the enterprise has shown that in the modern world, enterprises, alongside performing functions of economic agents, become key agents of social change: addressing global issues such as climate change, social inequality, and ethical business conduct. Concurrently, the majority of analyzed interpretations of the enterprise's essence are characterized by a narrowness of functional purpose. Many definitions fail to consider that an enterprise is an integrated system combining human, material, technical, and financial resources. In view of this, a new perspective on the enterprise is proposed, as an institutionalized aggregate of resources operating on the principles of a legal entity to realize economic value, growth, and sustainable development. The findings highlight innovation in approaches to defining the enterprise, particularly in expanding its functions in light of sustainable development requirements. The practical significance lies in forming a basis for developing management strategies for enterprises that meet the contemporary challenges of the economy and society, promoting their sustainable development.
